I went to Kuala Selangor

Last Saturday, I rounded up the guys (and one girl) to have dinner at this restaurant in Kuala Selangor. I’ve had dinner at this restaurant before with my parents and so was pretty certain that the food wasn’t too bad.

WL and KP (who was back in PJ to visit his grandma) came to my place (the agreed meeting point) and was busy tearing each other apart in a game of ping pong on the X360. We were supposed to be on our way to Kuala Selangor at 7pm but BY was late.

The 3 of us waited a little more. Till about 7:30pm he was lost and we had to drive out to locate him. By the time we were all set to go, it was close to 8pm. It’s too bad that the skies had turned dark because it makes traveling a little difficult.

So off we went, cruising along the Guthrie Expressway in two cars. The journey was quite interesting. I use the SmartTag system at the toll plaza and I assumed that BY did because he was right behind me. His tag somehow did not work and he got stuck behind the barrier. So we waited for him. Come the second toll plaza, he got stuck again! I had to stop by the emergency lane to wait for him. In front of us, was a parked SUV and from what I could see, the driver was actually relieving himself on the left hand side of the car! I was so tempted to flash my car’s high beam at him so it’ll startle him causing him to miss and dirty his feet… …but I didn’t.

Our journey to the restaurant was slow, there were several stretches of road where some inconsiderate drivers (stupid cab, I still remember you) going at 30 km/h. There was this one Kancil that I had to suddenly overtake. Quite exhilarating really, shift down to “2″ and floor the pedal. I’m surprised the Myvi can still accelerate well with 3 people in the car!

After rounds of “Are we there yet?” from the passengers in my car and BY himself (he called me). We finally got to the restaurant. I forgot the name of the restaurant.

The Captain came to take our order and this was one eccentric Captain, I tell ya. I warned WL about him beforehand but judging from his look I guess that didn’t really help. El Capitan was spewing lots of irritating jokes and later apologized to us saying he likes to kid around. I swear I could see WL’s hand reaching for the bottle of chili sauce nearby to probably clobber El Capitan with it. Only WL was bothered by El Capitan’s character, the rest were OK.

Moments later the food finally came! We ordered creepy looking sea snails (the shells had lots of spikes and they remind me of those pretty seashells you find beached along the shore) where you had to use the supplied stick to dig the meat out, dip it in hot water, dip it in chili sauce then eat it. No thanks, too adventurous for me. LL was having the time of her life eating them though.

Next we ordered deep-fried battered squid (or calamari) that comes with a special dipping sauce – mayonique. Or less classy, mayonik. Which is really, mayonnaise. El Capitan can’t pronounce it and so mayonnaise is known as mayonik in this restaurant. I told WL about this and when we ordered our food, he actually said mayonik to El Capitan. Digressing a little, when I was there with my parents, my mom was trying to stifle a laugh when she heard El Capitan pronounce mayonnaise as mayonik. She tried, but eventually ended laughing hard in front of El Capitan. Hah! Back to the squid. It was good, this was possibly my favourite dish. The batter was light and the squid wasn’t over cooked. It goes perfectly with the mayonik, oops, mayonnaise. Yum!

We ordered stir-fried bitter-gourd with duck egg. This was also not too bad! Simple but very tasty and I couldn’t taste the bitterness from the gourd. I’m not a fan of bitter-gourd but this was fine for me.

There was cockles cooked with red-wine (so he claims, it’s probably rice wine) and julienned ginger. This goes very well (I like cockles!) with steaming hot rice. Delish!

The crabs arrived next – 1kg of them. The were cooked in a creamy spicy buttermilk sauce as recommended by El Capitan and was truly delicious! The buttermilk wasn’t too rich, and the level of spiciness was just nice. I didn’t really eat the crabs as I was feeling quite lazy to peel the shell off the crab meat. LL was again, polishing most of the dish.

BY was still feeling hungry so we ordered fish. El Capitan recommended the house method of preparing it. The fish was served steamed accompanied with a tasty and tangy gravy that was very similar to tom yum but sweeter. The meat of the fish was fresh and I thought was quite good.

I had two rounds of apple juice (that was quite concentrated) and the rest had multiple orders of drinks as well. The damage came up to RM127 for 6 of us.

It was finally time to head back to my place. I seem to have a knack for getting lost and true enough I missed a crucial turn and found ourselves (I was leading again) heading towards Klang. It wasn’t that bad, just that it was slightly further.

We finally got back to my place close to 11pm. KP and WL wanted to play more ping pong. They left after an hour or so of passing the Xbox controls around while so everyone had a go at playing ping pong.

The next time I go Kuala Selangor, I would love to see the firefly show.

Anyone interested? :)
